Our learning goals this month:

Literacy:

Non-fiction text features will continue to be the focus of our English Literacy lessons.
During shared reading and guided reading students will have the opportunity to learn about and use features that help them understand what they are reading.

In honour of our class mascot "Coconut" we will be doing some reading about Lemurs.

The following link brings you to a "bonus" reading activity you can do with your child. It includes a recipe and an activity. Both are "Procedure texts" - one of the text types students have learned about this year.
Family Reading Activity

Français/Étude Sociale: Our French language lessons will continue to be directly correlated to our Social Studies unit on Pioneers. We will read non-fiction texts that teach us about daily life during this time period. Students will do a variety of "non-fiction" type writing tasks such comparison charts, cause and consequence diagrams to follow our shared readings as well as explanations and reports to follow independent reading tasks.

Student learning quotes taken from French reading response journals:student learning.jpg

"Avant il y a les lettres, maintenant il y a les courriels."
"Avant il y a les chandelles pour la lumière, maintenant il y a électricité."
"Avant il y a les poêles pour préparer la nourriture, maintenant il y a les mirco-ondes ou les grilles-pain"
"Avant il y a les chevaux pour transportation, maintenant il y a les autos."

Ask your child to explain these facts they learned!

The highlight this month will be... a visitor from the Chatham-Kent Museum to bring us:

"A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PIONEER STUDENT"

This workshop will focus on the life of a child in a one-room schoolhouse in 1860. Students will

participate in hands-on activities such as quill and ink penmanship, writing on slate, playing with

pioneer toys, and wearing a dunce cap. The class will also take part in several period learning

games such as Buzz, Constantinople, and the ever-popular Spelling Bee.

More info will come home soon about this fun workshop for our grade 3 students!

Math:

As our math unit about 2D shapes comes to a close we will move on to 3D figures.

The big ideas:
3d.jpg
  • to identify, describe, compare 3D figures using the characteristics they learned during our unit about 2D shapes
  • recognize examples of 3D figures in the world around them
  • build 3D figures from their net and identify 3D figures from their netsnet.jpg

Students have really enjoyed using DANCE to gain a better understanding of new math vocabulary. Check out our latest blog post here.

I am pleased to see the students completing the EQAO practise booklet each week. This will surely help them build problem-solving skills! Keep up the great work boys and girls!

Religion and Family Life:

As we continue on our Lenten journey and approach the joyous celebration of Easter students will hear bible stories related to Jesus' Passion and Resurrection.
